What Is SEO – In Clear And Simple Terms?

As a Web Design Company, we hear the question “what is SEO?” at least a dozen times a day. Many people struggle with the concepts of Internet marketing lingo that is rife with seemingly cryptic terms and phrases.  Simply put,  SEO is an acronym for “Search Engine Optimisation.” The method this describes is to create optimised Website that gain the attention of the search engines such as Google, Bing and Yahoo among many others.  The goal of being listed by the search engines and appearing on top of their searches is to garner free traffic aka ‘organic traffic’.

Search engines determine the relevancy of your Website  with a query that has been typed in by a user. The search engine than will match it up to the search term that someone has typed in. If you have high relevancy and your Website is well optimised than the traffic or that visitor in particular will see you Website in their results.

The terminology and Internet speak can be intimidating, however, it is not too difficult to understand exactly what this Internet game is all about once you understand the basics. What can be baffling is the consistently changing landscape of search engine algorithms – Google the biggest culprit in its endless attempts to clean up its search engines by filtering out the less than desirable or effective Websites that are out in Cyber space. That said, a basic understanding of SEO will assist you to work from a solid foundation and learn as you go.
